The Debunker
The Weirdo in Taiwan Documentary Series
Role: Post Producer / Assistant Editor / Stills
‘Our government is neither transparent nor perfect. It is far from being truly open and democratic.’
Nevertheless, most people do not feel that it has anything to do with them or they are able to change it. But Kiang believes that he himself can. In the real world, Kiang is an IT engineer, a homebody, a netizen, a father and a humble civilian. However, on the Internet, he can change the world.
During the pandemic, he created a map app that shows the users the nearest place to get masks. During the elections, he put the court’s judgements on a map app that shows the users which candidates had bribed the voters in the past. With his knowledge of information technology, he helps the government improve the failing services. Nonetheless, the more he has done, the more he is convinced that the problems the Taiwanese government has go beyond the digital technology…
Democracy is not only about voting. In a democracy, information should be reasonably accessible, and the citizens are expected to participate in the public affairs. We should ask ourselves whether we truly understand what the government has done for us.
